| Dunkles & Jaffa Cakes...A Quest For Taste is brought to you by the crew of Ian Roberts, Tim Shigley, Patrick McGinnis, and Colleen McGinnis with additional input from many other wonderful friends, family, and co-workers. Our purpose here is simple. We are sharing our experiences with you. If you are a fan of good beer, good food, good cigars, good music, or anything else that makes the human experience more enjoyable, then we are probably going to discuss it at some point. We specialize in beer reviews. But, this does not limit us to just discussing the finer (and sometimes lesser) points of Beer. You will find cigar reviews, food suggestions/pairings, restaurant reviews, band/music reviews, or anything else we think is worthy of writing about. During a recent trip to the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio, we epiphinated at the bar. I mean, we had this outstandingly excellent thought. You know, for several years now people have been subjected to a bland selection of beers and other food items. The big boys have developed beers that are meant to offend the least amount of the mass market. But just as vanilla ice cream and regular Folger's coffee have given way to Cinnamon Carmel Cashew Crunch ice cream and a Tall Raspberry Soy no-whip Mocha from Starbuck's, the world is eagerly searching for new ways to excite the taste buds! Really! We think people are bored with their lives, their food, their beer, and even their music. We strongly believe that the senses need to be stimulated to promote relaxation and even to satiate their extreme desires. We have noted examples (and we all know the people out there in this world) of people drink 12, 14, 16, even a case of Bud Light or Miller Lite at a single setting. WOW! When you drink a fine well produced porter, stout, or ale, you are lucky to put more than a few pints away before you are full and satisfied with the experience. Why is this? Partly because the products "we" are consuming aren't as watery. But, mainly because the flavors are so explosive that the brain "feels" satisfied after only a few drinks. The dilemma with microbrews, craft beers, and imports is that due to the cost of producing smaller amounts of beer, using higher quality products, and because less beer is actually consumed in the enjoyment process, brewers must charge a slightly higher price for their product. We do not find any fault with this. We strongly believe that this is a prime example of "Less is More". We are willing to pay a slightly higher price for the quality and the experience of enjoying a fine well crafted highly flavored brew. The same thing applies to eating, smoking, and even listening to music. Just open your eyes and look around. Just look at how many "specialty" restaurants are popping up every day. Look in our grocery stores at the many varieties of soda pops, chips, soups, lunchmeats, microwavable meals, and so on. Listen to the variety in our music scene. Our generations have been brought up in an era of growth, opportunity, desire, drive, motivation, exploration, and strife. We are so hungry for new experiences. We are hungry for more, more, and even more. So our time with you here may not be forever. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. What we do know is that the world is an ever changing place. Therefore, there must always be and there will always be... A Quest For Taste! Prost, Slainte, & Cheers! Tim Shigley 8/18/2007 |
